Syllabus of Mathematics A3
(for
civil engineering students)
Fall (First) Semester of
Academic Year 2010--11
Code: BMETE90AX07; Requirements:
2/2/0/E/5;
Semester: Fall 2010--11; Language:
English;
Attendance: recorded, absence at most five times from lectures or
practice classes, respectively.
Responsible person: Dr. Tamás Szabados
Official information can be found: www.math.bme.hu/~szabados
Requirement for final exam: satisfactory standing at the end of the semester.
There will be two 45 minute midterms during the semester. Satisfactory
standing: at least 30% on both midterms.
Midterm 1: in week 6, during
lecture class.
Midterm 2: in week 12, during
lecture class.
Maximum points in a midterm
are 20. The graded midterm exams will be available for viewing in the practice
class in the consecutive week after the exam. Later there will be no
opportunity for viewing or complains.
Make up midterms: week 13, in an
extra time outside classes.
The make up exam will be a chance for improving grade as well. The later
result will be the valid one, so you can even spoil your result in the make up.
Only one of the midterms can be improved with the make up.
There will be one more
opportunity to obtain satisfactory standing during the make up week, paying an
extra fee. Only those students may take this opportunity whose results are
worse than the minimum for satisfactory standing.
These students have to take an exam from the whole material of the semester, in
90 minutes. They have to score there at least 30% to reach satisfactory
standing there, and their midterm result will be 30% (the minimum level) then,
even if someone scores higher.
The method of creating the final grade.
There will be a written final exam in the exam period. The maximum available
points are 60. The minimum for passing the exam are 24 points (40%). Moreover, from the last 3 problems covering the material of the
last 3 lecture class one hase to score at least 6
points (30%) out of the maximum 20 points. Your total result from the
subject will be the sum of the midterm and final points. The final grade is
computed from your total by the following table:
-- 39. fail (1)
40 -- 54 pass (2)
55 -- 69 satisfactory (3)
70 – 84 good (4)
85 – 100 excellent (5).
Those students who have achieved satisfactory standing in a former
semester
may choose between the following two
opportunities:
1. Not taking again the midterms. Then their midterm results will be
taken 12 points (the minimum satisfactory level).
2. Taking again the midterms. Then they can get their actual new midterm
results. Still they cannot loose their satisfactory standing.
Please bring 6 empty sheets of size A4 to the midterms and 10 sheets to
the final. Plus bring a photo I.D. card and pen. Moreover, you may use your
pocket calculator and a sheet with formulae prepared by our department. Using
any other tool is forbidden. You have to follow the orders of the instructors
present during the exams. You are not allowed to communicate among yourselves
or with other individuals, not even in the last minutes when taking an exam.
The exams of those students who break these rules will become invalid, moreover, their total points of the semester will
be decreased by 10 points.
Lecture notes, worked out problems can be found on the homepage of the
subject.
The lecture notes
written by Dr. Károly Simon covers the whole
theoretical part of the subject.
There will be a problem sheet
to each week’s practice class.
April 5, 2010.
