Rostering of passenger rail crew in Hungary

The software system for rostering and scheduling of passegenger
rail crew was introduced in the year 2011 at the main passenger
rail transport company of Hungary. It was required to include
solutions for the automated design of rosters. The task is to
optimally design the rosters which are the basis for scheduling the work
of about 3000 conductors to serve about 3000 passenger
trains running daily. In the talk after a brief overview the literature
of railway crew rostering,  the particular problem as it arises in the
Hungarian context will be presented. The implemented approach which is
currently in use will be described in detail, along with our actual
experience. The roadmap and possible perspectives of the ongoing
development shall be also outlined.
